ABC BALUN
“BALUN” is the short form for “Balance-Unbalance”. It is the solution to achieve longer and better signal transmission.

Theory
ABC BALUNs allow the transmission of video using ordinary unshielded twisted pair(UTP) cable instead of traditional expensive coaxial cable. When a video signal is transmitted thru coaxial cable, the distance traveled by the signal is limited in part because the signal is in the form of an un-balanced signal which is susceptible to Electromagnetic/Radio Frequency Interference or "noice". BALUNs transform the video signal into a balanced form in which each wire in the twisted pair transmits an identical signal but with opposite polarized magnetic fields. Noice affects each signal equally and when combined, the noice is cancelled out. In combination with a properly designed BALUN, UTP cable can transmit video for much longer distances than coaxial cable.
Existing practice cost too much
Some usage of data transmission require high quality and long distance transmission, the best example should be CCTV (Closed-Circuit television) system. The existing approach for such practice is coaxial cabling. However, the fee for the installation of coaxial cabling is very costly. Even it can be affordable, the cable is not flexible enough to fit the infrastructure of high density buildings and offices. Also, the quality of the image after a long distance transmission will be degraded.
ABC BALUN, the solution
Using ABC BALUN with Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) wires provide a solution for high quality and long distance transmission. During transmission, the signals in the wire will be interfered. Signals in the two cables will get the same interferences. Thanks to the BALUN technology, it recognizes the common interferences in the cable pair. With the findings of interferences, BALUN stop them to reach the receiving side. So, all the transmitted data will carry an interference-free signal. Thus, in CCTV application, we can get a high quality image through a long distance transmission.

More benefits from ABC BALUN
Beside lower installation cost than coaxial cabling, BALUN with UTP in CCTV system provides a more flexible setup. Even in high density building and offices, it can achieve every corners and hidden spots. In addition, BALUN can supply power to its end, which means we can cut the cost to have additional power supply in conventional practice.
ABC Passive Video Baluns
What is a BALUN?

Coaxial cables are usually used to connect a wide range of video equipment, particularly CCTV equipment. Balun is a unique connector that can allow the usage of unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable instead of using the usual coaxial cable. With the use of Baluns, CCTV equipment can now be installed and connected using easy to use and less expensive UTP cables.
How beneficial is the ABC BALUN?
The function of the ABC Passive Balun is to replace the traditional 75-ohm coaxial cable with Cat 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable in the CCTV and surveillance environment, thereby allowing CCTV cameras and monitoring equipment to be deployed more cost-effectively using structure cabling techniques. The ABC Balun is also versatile and compact-sized to be installed onto video equipment in different combinations to achieve maximum utility.
What are the differences and advantages?
Using the ABC Balun to change the use of coaxial cable to UTP has a few advantages.
Cost
UTP cable is significantly less expensive than coaxial cable. The cost per foot of UTP can be up to 70% less than that of coaxial cable.
Quality
Over a maximum of 600m, UTP cable gives exceptional quality, far better than coaxial cable. Also, UTP cable has outstanding interference rejection.
Easy to use and install
UTP is lighter, smaller in diameter and more flexible than coaxial cable. It is easier to install and particularly easier for moves, changes and extensions.
The ABC BALUN finds applications in the following areas:
- House and Residential building security systems
- Traffic Monitoring systems
- Industrial and corporate surveillance systems
- Commercial and retail security
The ABC Baluns should be used in pairs with any video equipment.
The following is a list of equipment that can be used with the ABC Balun:
- Camera to DVR
- Camera to multiplexer
- DVR to CCTV Monitor
- Cameras to Video matrix switch
Typical Applications
The Passive Baluns can be used to establish various combinations of point-to-point connections with UTP cables. The following diagrams explain the possible basic applications.(Camera to DVR with External Power, Camera to DVR with Power from DVR and BALUN Camera to DVR with Power from DVR)
